Save The Cross Lances Article by Elaine Samuels July 2020
A planning application has been made to repurpose the land currently occupied by the
Cross Lances Pub. This article will show just how important this pub is to the local
community and why it should not be replaced.
One of the most uniquely characteristic and loved institutions of our country is the British
pub. How many times, when people move house, is having a 'nice local pub' nearby high
up on their wish list? What's one of the things tourists love about our country? Community
pubs are one of Britain's oldest and most popular social institutions. Many, having been
opened centuries ago, also have a cultural and historical heritage, which on its own
deserves to be preserved, let alone because of their practical community value.
In the last few decades, Hounslow has already lost 24 pubs. Seven of those disappeared
from the Hanworth Rd alone, namely; The Queen's Arms, The Earl Russell, The Rifleman,
The Tankerville, The Warren, The Greyhound and The Duke of York. In fact, the only pubs
now left along the Hanworth Rd. are The Sun and the Cross Lances itself! These lost pubs
have either been left empty or replaced by small supermarkets, flats, or catering
establishments; so nothing which serves to bring the community together.
Pubs, in particular, have been adversely affected by changes to society over the last few
decades, with the rise of the supermarket, along with its cheaper to buy beer, as well as
higher quality entertainment being available at home; all serving to encourage drinking at
home. Pub chains and taxes have also forced drinks prices in pubs to be even less
affordable for the average consumer.
The increase in more affordable, high quality technology - like the personal computer,
smart mobile phone, television and Hi Fi systems - encourages isolation in the community.
This exaccerbates loneliness and mental health issues as well as creating social barriers.
These are the areas where pubs score highly, bringing the community together with
activities like quiz nights, sports teams and live music events. They are a practical antidote
to the isolation promoted by modern living. The Cross Lances Pub is a supreme example of
just how much a pub can do for its community.
Since 2012, the Cross Lances has been run by the Real Ale Pub Ltd, with directors Adie
Line and Mike, Adie being the 'front of house' partner.
