Spirit
Rising
The live album , "Spirit Rising", was originally on sale at gigs. We had been trying to record the band since the summer of 2000; the
band appeared much more rarely and we knew it would make a nice full sound for a live album as well as give us good demo tracks
with which to try for the festival circuit. We recorded at live gigs using an eight track ADAT, which gave a very high quality result. We
learned some valuable lessons from attempting to record the band and (despite some problems with feedback, which also meant
that my guitar had to be turned off in the monitor; making it harder for us to keep together) we have a series of nail biting & highly
charged tracks (some numbers had never been played together before and we have moments where Annie's flute & Sim's violin are
duelling in harmony). There was a particularly memorable moment, during "All Along The Watchtower", where the mic stand Annie
was playing the flute through began to collapse and Joey held it up with one hand, while playing the bass with the remaining hand.
As well as Russell's drumming, this was be the first time the flute, electric guitar & electric violin had been recorded on a live album.
